I was in Vancouver from Jul 24-28, 2024. Several reasons allowed me to be there thankfully. The visit made me excited, yet 5 days of stay satisfied my soul. Having lived in a small town in British Columbia since 2022 December erased my feeling of joy living in a large city like Vancouver, BC. Living such a culturally rich place for 14 years, some may think that I would miss the city life, and yet every time I visit Vancouver (I quite often go there for many different reasons), I say, “It was a nice stay, but I am always ready to go back to my little community”
7月24日から５日間、ブリティッシュコロンビア州のバンクーバーへ旅行に行った。この土地には、2008年から14年間住んでいた。若い時にも留学で2年ほど住んだことがあり、慣れ親しんだ土地。一度訪れるとここに住みたい！と、思う人が多く、人気の大都市だ。私も、その一人で、文化や土地柄がとても気に入り、長く住めることに喜びを覚えていた。ところが、2022年12月より、同じブリティッシュコロンビア州の小さな街にあるきっかけで住むことになった。田舎暮らし。いつか、してみたいと思っていたが、やってみるとこれがなかなか楽しく、私の性分に合っている。去年は、２週間バンクーバーの夏を堪能しに行ったが、長すぎた。今年は、5日で満足した。早く自分の家に帰りたい。自然の中で静かに生きたい、と心から嘆願した。
What did I do in Vancouver? I had an important family gathering – this was a main reason. Other than that, having hair-cut in Vancouver and going to see my dentist appear on my to-do-list as high priority. Since 2010, I go to this hair salon called Muse on Cambie and 14th. My hair stylist, Misato, is a go-to person if you want to experience a Japanese hair stylist. She is amazing (see her instagram). My hair can be tricky to cut because of my waviness, however, she understand how my hair works. I just tell her how the finish can be, and she does the magic. She knows exactly what and how I want, and she make it possible. So wonderful!
なぜバンクーバへ？第一の理由は、家族の集まりがあったため。とても、大切な家族行事。その次に大切なのが、美容院と歯医者へ行くこと。これは、引っ越した後も続けて行っている。本当にありがたいことに、ちゃんと髪が伸びた頃にバンクーバーに行く用事が出てくる。特に美容院は大切で、かれこれ12年くらい通っている美容院がある。キャンビー通りと１４番街にあるMUSEというお店でそこで働いているMISATOさんという美容師が私のお気に入り。やはり、日本の美容のセンスや技術は素晴らしく、必ず気に入った髪型に仕上げてくれる。ちゃんと、私の髪質なんかを理解してくれて、要望を聞き入れてくれるので、わざわざ飛行機に乗って行く価値があり！なんだか、地方から大都市へ髪を切るために出かけるのは贅沢な話ではあるが、これは優先順位がかなり上なのです。自分のケアとそれに満足することはストレス解消の秘訣と言っても過言ではないかもしれない。髪型が決まらなかったら気分が下がる私。だから、お金とか時間をかけても自分の好きな場所へ出かけたい。
What else did I do? Shopping! I don’t care for browsing stores after stores for no reasons, yet when I do need (and want) something, I love purchasing some stuff I like! Still, my shopping can be done in no time tho. 🙂 Since I moved to a newly built place recently, I have been replacing a lot of house items! Also, SALE was on – Some things were 60-70% off! Those two reasons didn’t stop me to brows some of the stores I like. For instance, going to IKEA made me happy. Although not all the things there meet my standard, some items there deliver practicality. Also the simple design attract my eyes! I bought picture frames, bathroom items, some boxes for storage – for these kind of things other stores can’t beat ! IKEA wins.
他に何をしに？それは、買い物！私の性格上、いろんな店を用もないのにぶらぶらする、ということはほとんどない。ただ、何か必要なものがあったり欲しいものがあったりすれば、買い物に出かける。時間は、いつもあまりかかりませんがね。今回は、セールをしていて、６０−７０％オフのアイテムもたくさんあり、去年よりセールの割引率が良かった。今回の引越し先は、新築ということもあり、家の小物を初め色々買い替えている。引越しの時は、お金もかかるけど、これが楽しい。IKEAでは、フレーム、バスルームの小物、そして収納用の素敵な小さな箱２個セットを買った。IKEAは全てが私の好みではないけど、実用的でデザインがシンプルだからそれが嬉しい。今回も、素敵な買い物ができて本当にご満悦。
Other great things to do in Vancouver is to eat! All sort of world cuisine can be found. My favourite places to eat are: Banana Leaf (Malaysian) and Western Lake (Dim Sum/Cantonese). Some of my friends complained how the cost for eating out went up drastically. I agree with them. Adding to the cost of food, tax really kills the bill. In Canada, each province has different tax system. In BC, three taxes are added at the end of the bill when eating out: Provincial Tax, Federal Tax, and Liquor tax! Plus, 15-20% tip. So, about 30 to 35% extra fee adds on! Usually our bills (for two) end up between 60 to 120 Canadian dollars, so after tax, our total bill can be between 80 to 150 Canadian dollars! 🙂 that is expensive for sure especially if you do it everyday! This is why you want to find restaurants that satisfy your wallet and stomach! I find some of the online review can be tricky! We went to have a cup of ice cream – the review claimed that ‘best ice cream in town’. Yes, it was good, but very small cup of ice cream for c$8 plus tax and tip? I didn’t find the experience was worthwhile. They made each ice cream in front of you, so ice cram was super fresh and creamy. Yet, I think just a regular good ice cream (made with real milk, of course) for a little less money and more quantity should do for us when it comes to ice cream. I kind of thought about how travellers can be get ripped off by just reading those online reviews – they are not so accurate sometimes! 🙂 It’s best ask local people for their opinions. We used to live there – we should have gone to the one we know we like!
バンクーバーといえば、外食。多くのエスニックフードや世界の料理が堪能できる。特に、中華料理は、中国よりも美味しい！という中国人もいるくらい。ただ、高い！最近は、物価高騰でさらに高くなった。カナダは州により税金制度が違うため、差があるのですが、バンクーバーは外食には３つの税金がかかる。国の税金、州の税金、そしてお酒を飲めば、酒税がかかる。その上に１５かから２０％のチップを支払う。ので、食事代の３０％のさらなる料金がかかる。私たち２人の食事代は、６０ドルから１２０ドル、それに３０％が上乗せされると合計の食事代金が８０から１５ドルになる。今日現在（7月29日）の為替が１ドル112円くらいなので、9000円から16500円くらいになる。高級料亭みたいなところへ行くとこれの２倍から３倍。これを旅行中だからと毎日するとかなりの金額になるので、ちゃんと選ばないと、高い料金を支払い、あまり満足できないとなると損した気分になる。私が必ずバンクーバーで行くレストランは、バナナリーフ（マレーシア料理）とウエスターンレイク（飲茶）でとても満足する。料金もバナナリーフは、二人で１万円くらい。ヤムチャは、オンラインで注文して公園でピクニックで食べたので、あまりオーダーしなかったのと１０％オフでしたので、合計が３０ドル（3500円ほどでした）。お寿司も食べたのですが、握りが８貫で3500円ほどでした。味は、あまり美味しくない。カナダ人の主人は喜んで美味しい！と言いながら食べておりましたよ。3500円は安いよ〜、だって。嘘でしょ？って思っちゃいました。回転寿司より不味かったですよ。
For getting around, we used public transportation and EVO care sharing. If you are using public transportation all day especially going to different zone (there are three zones and Zone 2 has a few great shopping malls including outlet mall: Metrotown shopping centre & Outlet Mall near the Airport), Day pass (c$11.50) is a great choice. We did that for one day and we used EVO car sharing . For using EVO, singing you up on their website prior to use is required. We are BCAA member, so we always get 10% off. Plus, they were offering a special promotion until Aug 11, 2024 – 50% off for using the service more than 6 hours! Between 6 hours and 24 hours, the flat rate is $104.99 (this include gas, unlimited milage, and insurance!). So, for 48 hours, the total fee is c$210 plus tax. With that 50% off, we only paid about c$105 plus tax for two entire days! Isn’t this a great deal? It’s so easy to get around with a car! We absolutely loved it!
バンクーバーの街やその近郊の街を1日中ぶらぶらするならバスと電車を利用するのがおすすめ。デイパスと言って１日券（１１ドル５０千とカナダドルー情報はこちらへ）を使えば、どのゾーンでも乗り放題。これは、お得！そのほかに私たちが利用したのが、EVOカーシェアリングシステム。事前の申l込みが必要だが、レンタカーよりもかなり安くて便利。私たちは、BCAAロードサービスのメンバーで１０％オフがいつでも利用できる。それに加え、夏のキャンペーンで、６時間から２４時間のフラットレートを利用したら（１０４.９９カナダドル）５０％オフになっていました！といわけで、まる二日、乗り回して、ガソリン、マイレージ、そして保険代込みで12000円程でした！信じられないほど安いですね。今回は、この５０％オフ利用だったので、かなりラッキーでした。
It was a great trip, but we are so happy to be back to a small countryside home!
楽しい旅でしたが、田舎暮らしに戻ってホッとしております。
